Please recommend a video editing software for the Mac

i don't need an expensive video editing software (example Adobe Premiere) to edit simple videos taken with a digital camera. My videos would generally run about 1-2 minutes but there may be some when i would want to combine (merge/splice?) two separate videos into one because of the same subject. I just need cut-and-paste and simple fade-in, fade-out feature. Are there any free or inexpensive programs available that is compatible with the Mac OS X (Lion)?

OK further search by me reveals that the video editing software iMovie is free (I bought my desktop Mac after Oct 20, 2010 to qualify) and the software features look good for a beginner. I also note that the latest version of iMovie needs OSX 10.11.2 (El Capitan). Anyone have problems with the upgrade? I believe there is a thread on this and if someone can direct me to it I'd appreciate it.
