My Macbook Pro is frozen on the log in screen. The cursor is stuck in the top left hand corner and the keyboard doesn't respond.

My Pro is frozen on the login screen, the cursor is locked at the top left position. I can start in Safe Mode but when I do I cannot access any backups to restore the system. The backup is stored externally and is accessible manually via Finder but Time Machine can't find it. Any clues please?

- If you do not have a backup use disk utility to restore the internal disk to an external disk so you can try to recover data.

Then format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX
