MacBook Pro Trackpad and Keyboard freeze

Hello,

I have a Macbook Pro 13” Retina, Mid 2014. Purchased May 2015 and does not have Apple Care. No damage, no spills. Till a few days ago it worked beautifully.

I am recently facing a freezing problem with the trackpad/keyboard and it seems that I am not alone. There are many many people reporting the same issue on community forums, and Apple support sites. I am elaborating my case in detail below for your review:

August 12, 2016 onwards, my Macbook Pro froze after waking up from Sleep mode. The display and login screen showed up, as well as a mouse pointer on top left corner. However, these were not responsive. I used the Power button to do a shutdown. After restarting I faced the same problem.

Then, I connected a USB mouse, keyboard and external display and everything worked fine. The macbook trackpad and keyboard worked beautifully as well. For over 10 days now, I am able to successfully use the trackpad and mouse with no problems as long as I have connected a USB mouse, keyboard and external display. However, the macbook is unusable in stand alone mode because of the trackpad and mouse freezing issue.

I read various forums and support responses from Apple and tried the following:

a. Upgraded to the latest Flash version.

b. Disabled Bluetooth

c. Reset SMC

d. Reset NVRAM

e. Upgraded from Yosemite 10.10.5 to El Capitan 10.11.6

f. Ran Disk utility and did not find any errors

None of the above resolved the problem.

I used the MacbookPro in Safe mode - the trackpad and keyboard work just fine. No issues at all.

Based on the above, I do not think this is a hardware fault as the trackpad and keyboard work just fine when an external USB mouse and keyboard are attached, as well as in Safe mode. Going to the Apple Authorized Repair Center is my last resort, and I want to exhaust all options prior to that.

Any help to resolve the issue will be hugely appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi,

It's a macbook pro 13" retina. From what I know the battery is fused in. Is it possible to disconnect the battery cable? Will be great if you could share more detailed steps.

I took it the Apple authorised retail center and they said I should replace the top case ($ 400 approx.).... I might as well buy another mac if I am going to spend that money.

Yes - Apple you need to fix this... its a product flaw.
