    Hi Umeggie,

Thanks for checking out Apple Support Communities! I understand you're having trouble with your iPad closing out Safari and sending you back to the home screen. I use my iPad all the time for browsing Safari, so I can understand how this can be an issue for you and I'm happy to provide some suggestions.

The first thing that I recommend to do is to try restarting your iPad.

    How to restart

    1. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
    2. Drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
    3. After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.

The next step that you can take is to try closing out of the Safari app and then try relaunching it. You can find the steps for this below. You can also test this out on a different Wi-Fi network (if you have one available) to make sure that there's not an issue with the Wi-Fi network that you're connected to.

Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

The next step that I recommend is to reset your settings. This won't erase any of your data, but I recommend backing up just to be safe. You can find the steps for backing up below. To reset your settings, you'll need to go to Settings > General > Reset  > Reset All Settings. This won't erase any personal data like contacts, apps or photos but it will do the following: reset restrictions, de-register you from FaceTime and iMessage, remove Touch ID & Passcode, remove Apple Pay cards, reset wallpaper, brightness, sounds, date & time. It also removes all Wi-Fi network connections so you'll need your Wi-Fi password to re-connect.

    What model iPad is this?

How much storage space is left on your 16 GB iPad?

How many apps have you left running in the background in the iOS App Switcher?

How many tabs are open in your web browser while you are trying to surf the web?
