Q: Error message when exporting videos

When I export photos and videos from Photo to my external hard drive, I have hundreds of videos that won't export and I get an error message.  Is there any way to "fix" these videos so they export?

Not unless you provide information - obviously unless you tell us the error message we can not address it in any way. and we also need details like what version of the OS and of Photos you are using, what has changed since it worked, where your Photos library is stored and if it is on an external drive what format the drive is and how it is connected

Hi Larry, thanks for the answer on my previous question on that 2012 forum question.

Read all the article you sent me and i can tell the following.

    I have a macbook air os x yosemite 10.10.5.

I am trying to export or copy my videos from Photos to my external 1TB Lacie porsche design HD.

been reading about moving the whole photo library but the thing is I would like to keep my photos and just free some space from videos. I have done a copy with Time Machine.

Also downloaded silverkeeper but to be honest after all day long, can't remember why i decided not to go ahead with it after started running.

I keep on trying to export the video but gets the same error, and it doesn't matter if its a 1 or 2' video or if its a 5min one.

    A few things

You posted an image from an iPhoto export that failed and a Photos export that had a different failure - which software are you suing?

and OS X 10.10.5 is six updates behind - the current software is OS X 10.11 6 and has many, many bug fixes and new features - upgrading may be the answer

Can you export one video to the main hard drive? - what exactly happens when you do?

What format is the LaCie drive and how is it connected (in the finder select it and right click and get info to see the format)?

Do the videos paly correctly in Photos or iPhoto, which ever one you are using?

Hi, sorry for the iPhoto and Photo issue.

    im currently using Photo.

I bought the computer in may 2014 and have no idea about the difference of these 2 software till I started searching for some info.

You reckon I should upgrade? i remembered I tried but haven't got space...

I can drag a video to my desktop and from there drag to Lacie Share and it will move, but don't want to do this for all of them. they are quite a bit.

I am just thinking while I type, I could put them all in a folder in Photos and then drag this folder to desktop and then again but because they are almost 60GB will take ages?

I am sending two screen shots of Lacie Info...

the videos play ok in photos and also in Lacie share once I copied.

Could it be also because the original files are .MOV and when I drag the file to desktop it gets a new file type? .M4V?

    Thanks again.

its not letting me upload the Lacie info..dont know why!

it says I may have written the file name wrong...its just a print screen...didnt modify the name.

will right as much info as I can from the info...

    Lucie Share is

    Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)

    capacity 770GB

    Available 506GB

    Lacie is

    Windows NT File System (NTFS)

    capacity 230GB

    Available 144GB

Hope all the info is correct and we can find the solution.

Do I need to update to El capitan?

    thanks!

I have no idea what LaCie share is but you have several issues here

The Photos library must be on a volume formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) - having it on a case sensitive volume is likely to cause problems

The Photos library can not be on a volume formatted NTFS - in fact so far as I  know the Mac can not write to a NTFS volume without third party software

I'm guessing that your LaCie drive is formatted into two partitions with different formats - that is fine but you have to use the correct volume and if you want to move your Photos library that volume will have to be Mac OS extended (journaled) not (case Sensitive) - note that formatting a volume erases everything on it

Unless you have special third party software I do not believe you can write to the NTFS volume at all

In Photos there is a Videos album that will show all of your Videos - you can select them there and export (file menu ==> export)  --  you should be able to export to LaCie Share - try one

and yes you should get up to date with El Captain OS X 10.11.6 and Photos 1.5 - you are six updates behind and are missing many, many, many bug fixes and new features

Thanks for your prompt reply! you are fast....

The Photos library must be on a volume formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) - having it on a case sensitive volume is likely to cause problems

my Photos library is indeed on my mac internal drive, all good with that...

I'm guessing that your LaCie drive is formatted into two partitions with different formats - that is fine but you have to use the correct volume and if you want to move your Photos library that volume will have to be Mac OS extended (journaled) not (case Sensitive) - note that formatting a volume erases everything on it

you are right, they are 2 partitions...(don't know really why the external HD comes like that...)

In Photos there is a Videos album that will show all of your Videos - you can select them there and export (file menu ==> export)  --  you should be able to export to LaCie Share - try one

this is exactly what I was doing but for some reason I used to get the error message on my first post..

try the same export to your Mac hard drive - it may (although I don't think it is) be the case sensitive format causing this - I never us any format other than Mac OS extended (jounaled) so have no direct experience with any other disk format or specifically what problems it may cause

will update and see what happens..
