Q: Using USB Portable Monitor with Clamshell MacBook Pro

Hi,

I own a 13 MacBook pro with Retina Display (Early 2015) I am thinking of buying one of AOC's portable monitors, either the 16" or 17.3" to help my vision when I am at home or on the go. I am visually impaired.

Will the MacBook work when closed, plugged into the portable external monitor through usb, charging, and of course I will be using a wireless keyboard and track?

Basically what I am asking is the USB technology capable of allowing the external monitor to be powered when the mac is closed?

It sounds like you want to hook up an external monitor and use your computer in what is called "closed-display mode". I am happy to tell you that this is indeed possible! I actually use an external monitor myself, and it is the best thing ever!

You can find what you need to know in this article from Apple Support:
Use your Mac notebook computer in closed-display mode with an external display

Your computer has an HDMI port that can be used to connect to an external monitor, as long as the monitor has an HDMI input.

Sarah,

External Monitors are great. What I am asking is if a USB external monitor will be able to be used when the mac is in closed display mode?
