Q: If the "trusted device" is stolen, is there a way to prevent the verification code from being sent to that device?

My wife's iPhone 6 was stolen while on vacation and she got locked out from iCloud as she was upset and too nervous when entering the password.  The recovery procedure for password required that a text message be sent to the stolen device which was the only "trusted dervice".   Text message are visible to the thief.  Only after the text message was sent was the option of the "three day reset wait" available.  The procedure to reset the password should have asked if the "trusted device" was no longer to be trusted and provided an alternate option.  In any event, we do not have the 3 days time to wait as we are schedule to return home today and there are 2 days left we have to wait.   The phone is in the hands of the thief or a pawn shop.  Googleing I see that free software is available to unlock and reset any stolen iPhone 6 within minutes and it will be another 2 days before we can access iCloud and erase the phone.

TIA.

unaccountably, iPhone community did not exist so I changed the post to iCloud

Been there, done that bought the t-shirt even talked to the apple support supervisor.  If you are locked out and have set up two step you must wait 3 days before the email reset arrives.

Sorry, I should have said that "When I attempted to post to iPhone, I was told I could not post and was requested to select another community" and when I looked for a community, iCloud seemed the best one.  The original thread "HT201487" was on iPhone and I got to that from googleing "Forgot apple id".  I have no idea why I was not allowed to post to iPhone.

FOLLOWUP:  CAN'T UNDERSTAND LOGIC BEHIND PROGRAMMING THE TWO STEP VERIFICATION

OK, after 3 days I got the authorization to begin account recovery.  Incredible, instead of my wife recovering her account I was authorized to recover my own account!     When she attempted to recover her password she was asked for enter in a phone number so she used my phone number.  Since her phone was stolen it did not make since to use her phone number.  Well, I also have an iPhone 6 so even though it was her Apple ID the programmer "knew better" and used my phone number to look MY APPLE ID and send ME the account recover information for MY OWN ACCOUNT which I don't need.

This is clearly a case for a good lawyer to make a bunch of money off of.
