Q: Windows 8.1 via Boot Camp on El Capitan, iMac mid 2011

I am desperately trying for a while now to do a bootcamp installation of Windows 8.1 on my mid 2011 iMac 21,5' with El Capitan.

A lot of workarounds do exist for older iMac's like mine, but nothing seems to work for me. I already applied the BCA "hack" of editing the info.plist to make the option of generating an install disk available, i also tried the "old fashioned" way of installing via burning the iso image on a dvd.

I already tried multiple usb sticks (8 and 32 GB).

The result is always the same: "no bootable device found; insert one and press any key".

If theres any suggestion on how to get windows on my Mac, i would be really happy. I don't mind which way, as mentioned before i still have an internal optical drive.

Regards

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

You cannot use a USB Installer on 2011 Macs. A physical DVD will work. If the ISO from Microsoft is not burned correctly, it will not boot.

Please describe the method you used to created the DVD from the ISO.

all i did was right clicking the iso file and selecting "burn on medium...", using an empty DVD (Tevion DVD+R, 4,7 GB).

BCA still required an usb drive for saving additional software, but i guess thats normal.

The process is correct. You can also expand the Burn window and set verification and post-burn mounting of the ISO. I do not have any experience with Tevion media. Can you try Verbatim, Sony, TDK or Memorex media and test?

i don't have got anything else right now, but since that seems to be my only option, i guess i will try that soon (probably on a DVD+RW this time, to save resources on multiple trials)

verification might have been disabled last time, will try that.

When BCA started the process, during booting, before the black screen error occurred, the DVD got ejected. I injected it again, with no result of course. is the ejecting supposed to happen?

I have run into issues with DVD+RW media, but it is definitely worth a test. Can you post the name of the ISO file and the MD5sum? I can check it with the version that I have.

original name of iso file got lost, but its md5sum is 56296b4440842f7b145ead79912475b8

note that i extracted the iso file from the DVD for this. I have no experience with this stuff whatsoever, so i don't know if that changes something.

i have one empty DVD left right now, so i can try once again with a new download.

Before you burn the ISO to a DVD, please post the filename and md5sum. If possible, try and download the ISO using a wired connection. Block corruption can go undetected over wireless connections.

wired connection is not available unfortunately. heres the info of an iso image i downloaded earlier, when i tried the usb install:

    Win8.1_Pro_N_German_x64.iso

    27b31a1b7f3f75148ea516a7ca77ef94

it differs slightly in size from the other one, for whatever reason. i haven't used it yet.

    Same problem for me.

    I've got iMac 27' mid 2010, OSX 10.11.6.

I've decided to enlarge the bootcamp size, deleted the partition and now I cannot install Win 7 from the external optical drive using the original installation DVD (internal optical drive is dead).

The result is always the same as here: "no bootable device found; insert one and press any key".

    Regards

The external Optical drive will not work. Does the internal Optical drive allow a DVD to be inserted? If yes, please post the output of the following commands.

    drutil list

    druitl info

    drutil toc

drutil eject (this command will eject the inserted media)

Disconnect the external Sony temporarily. Can you play Audio CDs and/or video DVDs on the internal optical drive?

No, I can't. It ejects the disk.
