Q: dvd recording

Using the camera on my iMac, I recorded a few short "selfie" videos with grandchildren, and transferred them to DVD-R discs, using the computer's burn function. However, the discs could not be played on the family DVD-player. Do I need another kind of DVD? Or do I need to choose some other function on the iMac to burn the discs so they can be viewed elsewhere? Thanks very much. -Ed

If you want to play these disks on a family DVD player then they need to be "authored" into the formats these devices require. If you have a copy of iDVD on your machine that will do the job. If not then apps like

    Burn: http://macupdate.com/app/mac/21992/burn

    or

    Toast: http://macupdate.com/app/mac/6351/toast-titanium

will help. There are other options search on the App Store.

The full iDVD app is part of Apple's old iLife '09 suite of apps.

You maybe able to find the box set of iLife '09 from online source like Amazon.

You will need to do a custom install of the iLife '09 disc to just install the iDVD app and its menu themes.

iDVD is also part of Apple's old iLife '11, too.

The difference is with the iLife '11 versioh of iDVD, it comes with just the iDVD app and no DVD menu themes.

You really want the iLife '09 version of iDVD.

    Good Luck!

Thanks very much for the assistance in making DVD's!

Another question: I want to make a copy of a DVD, using my computer. I loaded the contents of the DVD on the iMac, but got this sort of result:

    file:///Users/edkalish/Desktop/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.BUP

    file:///Users/edkalish/Desktop/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO

    file:///Users/edkalish/Desktop/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.VOB

I couldn't use these files (and a huge list just like them!) to make a copy of the original DVD. What is the key to copying DVD's?

    Thanks, again.

This looks and sounds to me like you want to duplicate a commercial DVD which you cannot do...legally.

This is the type of copy protection that the motion picture industry uses to prevent users from copying the contents of the actual movie file. They wiil copy of bunch of different "dummy" copies of the video files to keep users from finding the correct file.

Disney uses this type of copy protection. There are two other copy protection schemes that the motion picture industry uses to keep users from copying content.

A free, open sourced program called Handbrake USED to be able to, illegally, circirmvent, copy protection for many years, but I have been informed that the developers were forced to change their coding back around 2009-2010 to prevent Handbrake from ever breaking DVD copyright protection ever again.

You CAN use Handbrake to copy personal HOME movies that have been burned to DVD to copy and use different formats and file sizes for all the different Apple devices, however.

Just not for copying copy protected commercial movie industry content.

Some users maybe still have older versions that could still do this, but older versions of this program will not be able to crack or circumvent newer copy protection schemes put into place on DVD discs.

There are other paid programs on the market that wiil do what you ask, but itis against to TOU agreements here in these forums to discuss those and the procedures to do illegal DVD copying.

So there is nothing further to discuss.

You will have to do your own web search to find the answers you seek if you want to be able to do this, anyways.

    You are on your own.

    Good Luck!

This is why the motion picture industry has different DVD/Blu-Ray digital download options, now, so you can download digital, copy protected versions of purchased movies on disc for free to put, directly, on your computer or mobile devices.

Good heavens! No, I'm not trying to illegally copy a commercial DVD. I had copied home videos to an empty DVD, and had trashed the original videos afterward. I wanted to make a copy on my computer of the DVD which now contained the videos. I have had Handbrake, but haven't used it for a while. Is that the only means available to me for making a copy of the DVD (without additional software)? Thanks.

What handbrake does is "rip" the DVD and makes a copy of the movie not the disk. There are various utility that can duplicate the disk for recopying, including Disk Utility

When I copied the home DVD into my computer, I ended up with the files below. There seems to be no way to convert these files back into the original video.
