iPad mini 4 unable to use the split view function, the bar on the side isn't showing up, I need it for school

when I swipe right, the 1/3 screen shows up like its supposed to, but when I select any of the apps (the ones that work with the split screen function, as they are on that list of apps) the bar that is supposed to show up on the left to drag the screen to creat the split view is not showing up no matter the app I select. Please help, I start school soon and this is vital that I get it fixed or studying will become much harder and time consuming than it already is.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding the split view function on your iPad mini is not working as expected. I definitely understand your concern, especially since you're using this for school. I am happy to help get this resolved with you.

First I recommend force closing any apps that you're trying to use with Split View and try again. Use the steps in the link below to force quit apps:
Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If the issue persists try restarting your iPad. This can resolve many unexpected behavior issues.

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.

Drag the slider to turn your device completely off.

After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
