Q: Markup & reply icon missing in mail

I am new to the Apple Pencil but yesterday managed to "mark up & reply" to a attachment in mail. Holding down the attachment brings up the option box which includes the little toolbox icon, "mark up & reply".

Today I cannot see the icon, the box pops up from either holding down the attachment or forwarding the attacment but no little toolbox.

The pen is connected by blue tooth as it operates and draws in mail.

I am a bit confused & frustrated - please help.

I am using iPad Pro iOS 9.3.4 and the software is up to date

iPad Pro, iOS 9.3.4

I checked my iPad 4 with IOS 9.3.4. Holding my finger on a photo in email I got the share window with the mark-up and reply option. To help isolate the problem try sending yourself a photo then see if you get the share winow with the mark-up and reply icon.

    Hello Bob

I sent a photo to myself in mail and holding my finger on the photo got the share box with the "markup and reply option" - Yes!

I tried again with the word.doc mail attachment and the share box comes up but NO "markup and reply" option.

    Any other ideas pleas?

Make sure you have the most recent version of Word installed. MS updated Word just a few days ago, specifically to make it compatible with iPad Pros.

Any luck with Rysz's suggestion or if you send yourself a document from another source ?

Does it work properly if you don't use the pencil ?

Did you update your iPad causing it to be not compatible ?

Try a reset. Press and hold both the home and power buttons until the Apple logo appears. Release both fingers. Wait until your iPad starts on it's own.

    Hello Rysz

I do not have word on my iPad, this was an incoming attachment.  I use Pages which is up to date.  I imported the attachment / word document into pages as well but there is not an option to "markup & reply" in pages (or I could not find it even though the option box pops up when you hold your finger on the document).

Thanks for your comments, any other thoughts?

    Hello Bob

No luck with Ryz's suggestion. The pencil makes no difference than if you use your finger. The iPad is only 4 weeks old so the operating system is as supplied by Apple and currently up to date.

I also sent myself an email with a pages attachment sent in "word" format and also "pages" format.  neither had the "markup & reply option" In the pop up box when holding down on the attachment.

The reset option did not work either.

If you live near an Apple Store I'd recommend taking your Pro in to have it looked at. It's too new to be having problems.

I have managed to work this out now. Reading the manual in ibooks CAREFULLY it does say clearly that the attachment must be an image or a pdf.  I was trying to "mark and reply" to a word.doc

I changed the document to a pdf in the pages app and it now works.
