Q: Where are shared documents on my mac?

Hi everybody,

I am really happy about using iCloud to work on documents with colleagues, friends and family.

However, my brother shared a document with me and I am only able to work on it in the web interface.

I am not able to find anything on line, I have tried many researches but nothing brings an answer.

I hope you will help me

    Hello matt_fack,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities!

If I understand correctly, you are unable to download a document to your computer that was shared with you thru iCloud.  I will be happy to help.

When a document is shared via iCloud, the person who shares it is the "owner" of the document.  More information can be found here:

Sharing links to iWork documents in iCloud

If you need to store the document locally on your computer, then the owner would need to Send a copy:

    Send a copy

    To send a copy:

    1. Tap or click Share share button in the toolbar.
    2. Choose "Send a Copy." Then, choose a sending method: Message, Mail, iTunes, WebDav, or AirDrop (depending on what your Mac or device supports).
    3. If you haven’t saved the document on your Mac yet, a Save dialog appears. Choose the format and settings for the document. Some file types offer choices for image quality, format options, or passwords.
    4. Click Next.
    5. Provide the necessary information for the sending method (such as an email address). If you aren’t signed in to a Messages or Mail account, you'll be asked to sign in before continuing.

Note: For AirDrop, recipients might need to accept the file before the document is transferred to them.

Hope this helps!  Have a great day!

    Hey tim_135,

thanks for the great answer, I appreciate that!

As far as I understand, the only way to modify a document and have it shared automatically is to work on it on the web interface? It would be nice to have access to the documents like in other clouds:

    1) I create a document

    2) I save it on the cloud

    3) I work on it and each time I save it is updated on the cloud

    4) whoever is invited to participate to that document can work on it and update it directly on the cloud

I would love to work on my mac instead of using the web interface.

Saving a copy does not allow to update the file dynamically as on other clouds, right?

Thanks again! Have a nice one, too!
