Hi

When comparing calorie data between other devices and their apps, keep in mind that Apple Watch reports active energy / calories, whereas many other fitness apps report total energy (resting + active calories).

To help improve the accuracy of steps and other activity-related estimations made by Apple Watch, you can calibrate your watch:

  • Calibration teaches your watch how your arm movements relate to your stride lengths at different speeds when you are walking and/or running. It does this - during outdoor walks and/or outdoor runs - by comparing data from the accelerometer with GPS (Location Services) data from your iPhone.
  • It may help to reset your calibration data and start afresh:

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Privacy > Motion & Fitness > tap on Reset Calibration Data.

  • To calibrate your watch, follow the instructions here:

For the best performance from the heart rate sensor (data from which is also used when estimating calories), during workouts ensure that you wear your watch snugly on the top of your wrist. Apple suggests that you consider tightening the band before starting a workout and loosening it again afterwards:

Activity estimations also depend on your personal information. To check that this has been entered accurately and to update it over time:

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Health > Edit (upper-right).

In order to credit progress towards your daily Exercise goal, the Activity app aims to identify activity that equals or exceeds the intensity of a brisk walk. This applies both during general daily wear and when recording workouts via the Workout app. It is possible that your exercise (whether recorded via the Workout app or just via the Activity app) is not meeting this requirement for the full duration of your activity.

The definition of a brisk walk varies by person and depends on your personal information. To check that your personal information is accurate, follow the steps in my previous reply.

Calibrating your watch improves the accuracy of activity-related estimations including Exercise goal progress - my previous reply again refers.

If you would prefer to receive Exercise credit for the full duration of a workout, regardless of its intensity level, track it via the Workout app and choose Other as the activity type. This will credit one minute of Exercise for each full minute of the workout. Active calories will be estimated at a rate equivalent to a brisk walk or based on data recorded by the heart rate sensor, whichever is higher.
