iCal will not load

Question

iCal will not load

beginning today iCal will not load. I have not had a problem before. The application starts, bounces, stands still, then there is a weird, faint, 3-buzz sound which keeps repeating, then an error message. Running OS 10.4.8 on a G4 Powerbook. All other applications seem to work fine. I have tried reinstalling, reloading from my Tiger installation disk, re-everything, but the result is still the same. What gives? Anybody have any ideas.

Hi Russell,

It may help to know what the error message says?

Try creating a new user account on the computer and test iCal there. Does iCal function ok in a new user account?

the error message says "iCal has unexpectedly quit." Happens every time. I will try creating a new user and see what happens.

Of course iCal works perfectly on the other user, and of course it continues to unexpectedly quit on the original user

Hi Russell,

Go to your user's Library > Application Support > iCal > Sources. Do the following for each folder there:

Move the file 'corestorage.ics' of the folder to the Desktop. Try to open iCal. If iCal fails to open, move the 'corestorage.ics' file back into the folder where it came from.

If iCal opens fully, the calendar whose folder you removed the .ics file from will have a red exclamation mark by it. This calendar's data is corrupted. Click red exclamation mark and from the dialog that appears choose 'Reset'. With the calendar still highlighted in iCal go to the File menu and select 'Import...' and navigate to your Desktop and open the 'corestorage.ics'. The process of importing will hopefully clean the faults in the calendar.

I just spent 4 hours chasing this one.

Turns out that an ics file in the Incoming folder had a ']' in the file name. ie. 'a meeting to talk about [squid].ics'

iCal 2.0.5 throws a EXC_EXCEPTION and dies.

Removing this file fixed the problem.

I tried this but iCal never stayed open.

Assuming multiple calendars were corrupted, I moved them all to the Desktop. iCal generated two new folders, opened, and the closed unexpectedly.

I've also verified that the Helvetica font is installed.

Any other ideas?

I move the whole parent file for the corestorage.ics, reopened and it works great. Since I sync with .mac all my info came back.
