Q: putting calculation into a cell in numbers

Hello to anyone who can help...

 

I am trying to create a spreadsheet that keeps track of points scored in a fantasy football league. I am having a problem with a certain element of this. I have used the sum formula to add up each person's scores they get each week to show their overall total points. This works fine until i would like to deduct points (players are deducted -4 points when they wish to swap a player). I want to be able to show the players score for that week and show they took a point penalty to make their swap all in the same cell but when I try with something like '(-4)' it just ignores everything within that cell.

 

Does anyone have the answer for putting a calculation within a single cell to then be added to a total in another cell?

    Hi Quinn,

     

    Apart from a simple sum formula to give the total score, I don't have any other formulas but this is what the table looks like:

    As you can see it all works fine until I try and document the -4 points 2 players incurred. When adding the -4, it doesn't recognise the content and simply ignores the cell.

     

    Is there anyway to get this to work?

    Hi shainberg,

     

    When you type 48- (-4) into a cell you have a text value that will not be summed. If I type 48-4 I also get a text value. One way to get what you want is to add a column to hold the swap player points. You would then total the 3 columns.
