Q: How can I fix this false Bootcamp Installer error message?

I'm (trying to...) installing a disk copy of Windows 7 Home Premium on my 27" iMac using Bootcamp, an external disk reader and an external hard drive - so far I've created the ISO file using Disk Utility which I have saved on my Desktop.

Now, when I launch bootcamp installer and attempt to copy the ISO onto my Toshiba external hard drive, I get the following message...

Your bootable USB drive could not be created

There is not enough space available on the disk

This is impossible as the Toshiba external is 1TB (999.96gb) - which has been completely erased and reformatted to MS-DOS (FAT32).

Am I missing something? Can anybody help me out?

Thanks in advance

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

What year/model is your iMac? Are you still running Snow Leopard?

It's an iMac (27-inch, late 2012) running OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6

The official ISO can be downloaded directly from Microsoft as well - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/home . I assume you have used this - Create an ISO image for Boot Camp from Windows installation media - Apple Support - to create your ISO.

You do not need an external USB HDD, but you need a USB2 flash drive of 8+ GB. A external USB HDD will cause problems further in the process of installation. If you have a mixed 32-bit/64-bit ISO, you will see the disk space error, because a FAT32 file system cannot store a file larger than 4GB and the install.wim on your ISO is larger than 4GB. You need a 64-bit only ISO from the link I have noted earlier.
