Q: Can send via Apple Mail at work, but not home

I have an issue that has been ongoing for 3 years, on two machines (one Mavericks and now El Capitan).

The Apple Mail smtp server sometimes sends mail when I'm home, sometimes not. Sometimes I've updated the smtp settings to add a server and change something, then Mail wouldn't send when I'm at work.

I've asked IT office at work, they're not sure what is going on and have given me what should be the right settings.

I'm about two seconds from dumping Apple Mail for good if I can find another app that is any good.

Thanks.

OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

    Hi,

Open the Mac Mail app then go to the menu bar and click Window > Connection Doctor

    Use Mail Connection Doctor

What email provider are you using? Is it a work account? Some email services prevent you from sending email outside of their network. You may be able to configure an SMTP server password login to allow sending outside the network.

This is a work email provider. I have asked the network admin for the settings to use and they are also confused as to why it isn't working consistently.

I have two SMTP outgoing servers set up in Mail: one for when I'm on the network at work, and one for home. Last night I was finally able to get the mail to send from my network at home, using the 'home' SMTP setting. This morning, even after a reboot and changing the default SMTP server to the 'work' one, the mail is stuck in the Outbox. The Connection Doctor says the connection and login to the SMTP server has succeeded. This 'work' SMTP was working correctly for weeks, but now it isn't.

Even though I have these outgoing servers in two different settings, I can't get them both to work on any given day or week.

And now, after 15-20 mins of mail being stuck in the Outbox and a "Sending" status at the bottom of the Mailbox List pane, the emails finally sent.

    What could be causing this?

    I don't know.

If you open Connection Doctor and click the Show Detail button, it will display all of the connection information when there is activity. Try opening that up and then try to send some emails. See if there are failures or other odd messages listed there.
