Every time I send an email, Mail sends it twice. This can be annoying to the recipients and I'd like to resolve it.
The recipient receives two emails and I sent one so there is a duplicate each time at their end. Using hotmail account on my end.

I already checked the recipiets, and they indeed are receiving the e-mails twice.
Your tip didn't fix it for me.
After all the people complaining about Mail SENDING two emails (not just a view problem) we still have no solution.

Did you tell Apple about it? We're only users like yourself here and mentioning it here won't get back to Apple.

Presumably when and if it becomes widespread enough.
I have the same problem, I don't understand why the Mail app does this.

I have this problem with some of my emails, being sent from my Mac running El Capitan. It seems to be when I send emails to my colleagues in the office using Outlook, and not every email. Note some people in the thread that this is only a perceived problem as you see two email in the sent box - with me at any rate this is not the case as my colleagues complain vociferously every time it happens - not only do I have two copies in my sent box, but they receive two copies -why they cannot just delete one I do not know.
Can anyone help with a solution?

I understand that it can be quite annoying when duplicate emails are sent to your recipient, when you only intended one to be sent off. In my previous experience with this type of issue, it is usually caused by an alias email address being used along with the original email address. In this case, if you are using the Mail app on your Mac and have both the hotmail.com address and it's alias as a separate account. When emails are sent from either the primary or alias address, both accounts will send the same email.
To resolve, you should remove one of the accounts, whether primary or alias from the Mail app using the steps in the following support article: Mail (El Capitan): Set up Mail with your email accounts You can also disable them temporarily so when sending an email from either account, the other should be disabled while sending. This should alleviate the duplicate emails being sent off.

I do not have an alias account. There is only the one @hotmail account that I am aware of. So not sure where to go with it. Peculiar, indeed. This was not an issue with Yosemite, but since El Capitan it cropped up. I deleted the mail account and went through the setup procedure again and it was resolved for a few days and returned.

I had the same problem too. Actually the issue is with the view of apple mail if you check the recipients they must be receiving the email once only.
To solve this go to your apple mail sent folder > view > un check organise by conversation.
This will fix it. Worked for me.
Microsoft made the process of converting their accounts (Hotmail and Outlook) to IMAP a pigs ear of a mess (look it up, it was in all the papers), and they are still not very good at it. But as shanky etc said the mail is usually not sent twice, it just looks that way at your end.
The most sensible advice I can give you is to dump Microsoft until they figure it out, after all it is 2016 and IMAP is not new.
