Q: deleting email/photos from multiple devices

when I delete a photo or an email from my Mac, shouldn't it also be deleted from my iPhone?  I thought that's what iCloud what about...connecting all of your devices?!

Photos YES, but only if using the same Apple ID and with iCloud Photo Library turned on everywhere.

Mail Yes, again, if you're using the same accounts, but only if these accounts are IMAP. POP accounts do not have that syncing capability.

ok, I have iCloud photo library turned on on both devices, and just checked my email and it is IMAP, but they are not connecting when it comes to deleting items...it's driving me crazy because I'm having to duplicate all the deletes!

If you are using ICPL and if all devices are logged into iCloud using the same Apple ID and if all devices have completed all uploads and are up to date then any change made to Photos (addition, deletion or edit)  on any device will be made on all devices

Neither syncs instantly. iCPL, especially, can take a bit of time.

In Mail, you can "force" a refresh by pulling down on the accounts Sidebar, but remember that it's still dependent on making the round trip over the Internet.

Just to make sure everything is working a sit should, you can try these standard troubleshooting steps.

Reset: hold down the Home and Power buttons until you see the Apple logo (10-20 seconds).

If this doesn't help, you might need to Restore your iPhone: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204184

If your backup is to iTunes, make sure it's an encrypted backup.
