Q: Numbers keeps opening a deleted file

I was sent a file a few days ago in excel format - let's say file name is "Wednesday". Today I was sent another excel file by the same person - completely different file and file name - let's say file name is "calculations". Whenever I try to open "calculations" it opens the content from "Wednesday" even though it says "calculations" at the top. When I open the file on my phone it's all in order but no matter what I do it doesn't work on my laptop. I have tried the following:

1. Deleting the file and emptying the trash and sending the file from phone to computer over AirDrop

2. Saving the file on dropbox from my phone and opening it on my laptop

3. Deleting the file, emptying trash and restarting my laptop.

What the heck is going on!!!

Please help.

you can always check the path to a file by holding the command key while clicking the title in the title  bar... like this:

here you can see the file "BKPowerSupplySequence.numbers" is stored in the path:

    Proton : HGST 1TB : Users : wayne : Documents : FTI : Harmony

Have you tried launching Numbers, going to File > Open in the menu, and navigating to the new Excel file to open it that way?

If you hold the shift key and launch Numbers it will open the app without opening any other files.  Maybe the app is automatically opening your previously open files?  Once Numbers is open without any files open you can try opening the file you want to work with.
