Aug 24, 2016 5:31 AM in response to dialabrainby wp247,Not all IT departments have as much faith macs are impenetrable and insist on having AV installed if you want to connect to their network (probably not unreasonable with windows machines on the network).

Yes, their professional credentials are likely not much better than the software engineers at Avira.
Can you disable the automatic delete? There are no "dangerous" emails on OS X as OS X isn't stupid enough to run programs attached to random emails.

Aug 24, 2016 6:03 AM in response to wp247by WZZZ,Don't let avira delete a suspect e-mail, that's where the problem is coming from. Once it identifies such an e-mail, delete it manually yourself, or first check out the attachment (without opening it) with VirusTotal.

Aug 24, 2016 7:18 AM in response to wp247by dialabrain,FWIW, after re-reading your first post I realized I had misinterpreted what you said. I thought you had already tried disabling Avira. Not enough coffee or age is catching up with me.

Aug 24, 2016 11:10 AM in response to wp247by John Galt,Use the uninstaller included with Avira's installation package. You will find it in your Mac's Utilities folder, unless you removed or deleted it.
Like similar ill-conceived garbage, its uninstaller is not completely effective. The following files and folders will require manual removal:
~/Library/Application Support/Avira
/Library/Application Support/Avira
~/Library/Saved Application State/com.avira.uninstall.savedState
~/Library/Saved Application State/com.avira.controlcenter.savedState
/var/log/com.avira.helper.watchdox.log
Back up your Mac prior to making any changes to its file system.
