Q: avira & mail infinite loop

Has anyone else experienced the avira / mail infinite loop?

Avira deletes an email with a dangerous attachment.

Mail redownloads.

Infinite loop.

Mail freezes.

Only solution is to disable avira, kill mail.

Delete message and re-enable aviria.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

The other option is to uninstall Avira since it's not needed and only serves to slow your Mac down.

Not all IT departments have as much faith macs are impenetrable and insist on having AV installed if you want to connect to their network (probably not unreasonable with windows machines on the network).

Well, you would have to contact Avira support since it's up to them to write the program correctly to work with El Capitan and Mail.

Yes, their professional credentials are likely not much better than the software engineers at Avira.

Can you disable the automatic delete? There are no "dangerous" emails on OS X as OS X isn't stupid enough to run programs attached to random emails.

Don't let avira delete a suspect e-mail, that's where the problem is coming from. Once it identifies such an e-mail, delete it manually yourself, or first check out the attachment (without opening it) with VirusTotal.

FWIW, after re-reading your first post I realized I had misinterpreted what you said. I thought you had already tried disabling Avira. Not enough coffee or age is catching up with me.

Use the uninstaller included with Avira's installation package. You will find it in your Mac's Utilities folder, unless you removed or deleted it.

Like similar ill-conceived garbage, its uninstaller is not completely effective. The following files and folders will require manual removal:

    ~/Library/Application Support/Avira

    /Library/Application Support/Avira

    ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.avira.uninstall.savedState

    ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.avira.controlcenter.savedState

    /var/log/com.avira.helper.watchdox.log

Back up your Mac prior to making any changes to its file system.
