Q: no sound when connecting Macbook Pro to ext. speakers
I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15", Mid 2014) running OSx 10.11.6 (El Capitan).
It has a combined 1/8" audio port for both speakers and microphone. The internal speakers work fine and the port works fine with headphones. What does not work is connecting to the external powered speakers like computer speakers or the AUX port on a radio. This has worked just fine with every other computer I've ever owned, and judging from the page linked below it should work for this computer, too, so what's the problem??
Connect your Mac to a home stereo, iPod, iPad, musical instruments, or speakers - Apple Support
I've tried it with a 1/8" cable that only carries sound (no band for microphone), and (when that didn't work), I tried first inserting an adapter that split out the audio and microphone, but that didn't fix the problem.
How do I make this work?

I figured out the problem. When I plugged a cable into the headphone jack, the Mac automatically turned the volume way down - assuming I was plugging in headphones. That's why I couldn't hear it. I opened the Sound applet in the System area and turned the output volume back up, and voila - fixed.
