Wireless Carplay can someone help explaining?

I have a 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid with "wired" Apple CarPlay. The vehicle also has wifi. What I dont understand is why the wireless function does not work? My vehicle displays under MY CAR in my iPhone settings and so forth. Can someone explain the technology side of why it wont work and what would it take to make it work wirelessly? Is it an iOS update? Is it something that possibly can be turned on later down the road?. .I don't quite get it. thanks
