Q: Macbook Air 2013 - Shutting Down

Hi all,

I've had a macbook air for about 3 years now and have no problems with it whatsoever, however the past two days I have noticed if it is unplugged from the AC adaptor it will shut down, this can vary from a few seconds upto 20+ minutes, it will not turn back on without being plugged in and you can almost hear it start to try then nothing.

I tried resetting the SMC, didn't work. I thought that it could possibly be because my laptop had been close to full storage on a number of occasions, so did a factory reset and fresh install of the OS, nada.

Has anyone got any advice? Money is tight so hoping it is just a battery problem and not something that is going to cost an arm and a leg.

Here is my battery information.

Regards!

Post the same Battery Information (from System Profiler) when the power adapter is not connected. I want to see its power consumption.

I realize your Mac shuts down pretty quickly when running on battery power and that might be difficult.

In all likelihood, the problem is a defective battery despite the fact its condition is reported to be "normal". Apple's replacement cost is $179 + tax which includes labor, diagnostics, and a one year warranty.

    Hi John,

Thank you for your reply. I took apart the macbook earlier and removed the battery and gave it a clean and reinstalled it, since then touch wood my macbook air has not shut down once when not attached to a power adaptor and the length of time it stays charged has slightly improved, however I am not sure whether this is a quick fix or if it is just a fluke and it will happen again shortly.

Is this the information you are requesting? It all appears to be pretty similar to what it was earlier when I was having the problems except the amperage earlier was 0 and is now -1778, i'm unsure what that means in all honesty.

    Kind Regards!

I have also noticed the full charge capacity has increased from 6658 to 6732, i'm unsure how removing some slight dust can do this!

I wouldn't have recommended taking anything apart. Plenty of people kill their Macs by doing that, but obviously you made out OK.

the amperage earlier was 0 and is now -1778

It's zero when connected to a power adapter with sufficient capacity. At that usage (which varies according to what the Mac is doing) you ought to get over 3 1/2 hours on a full charge. If that stays more or less the same, consider the problem fixed for now. If it should reoccur take it to Apple.

by taking it apart I mean I took off the bottom casing unclipped the battery removed it gave it a small clean and put it back in, I've had to take the casing off before to clean the fan and I guess if people have killed their macs I have been very lucky twice but I have also been very careful. the issue does seem to have resolved itself so I'm thinking it might have just been a loose connection between the battery and logic board. hopefully all is OK but will take to Apple in the future if anything goes wrong. thankyou for your advice/explanation John it's very appreciated.
