File Error: The Specified file is open and in use by this or another app...

I have imported a string of pictures and dragged them into the FCP timeline. I render them and it renders a certain percentage then it stops and says "File Error: The Specified file is open and in use by this or another application."

After reading this, I quit out of FCP, restarted my computer, opened FCP, nothing other program, tried to render again and same thing happened. It renders part of it then the error message pops up, then I can render again and it will do another percent then it will pop again and so on.

Suggestions, or does anyone know why this happened? Thank you very much for your time.

You misunderstood about #3. The idea there is to identify which is the problem file (or files, I suppose.) Keep halving the group that causes the error message until you narrow it down to one file, then report back.

This exact same thing has happened to me only since I got my new MacPro--on a regular basis, but not all the time. Running OS 10.4.8 with FCP 5.1.2. Nothing else running, no Norton, all scratch disks off the boot drive. I just do the rendering again. Takes about 3 times, usually.

Huh, isn't it strange! What a pain. I have to render more then that though sometimes. I am not even going to mention all the other problems with the Mac Pro, those will be for another discussion some time. But I think I will have to have it sent in or replaced eventually.

Ok, #3 this isnt working becuse for some reason it render ok sometime and sometimes the problem happens. SO I never know which part it is or not. I think I will try the Photoshop idea. What do you think Brian?

Sheesh, I should try reading the original post more carefully. I've been approaching this as though it were an import problem. Silly me.

I think you've nailed it, SSteele.

Andrew, dump your renders for that sequence (Render Manager) and render again. If you get the same error message, then half the sequence and use the same having process to ID the corrupt clip. Delete that clip and re-import.

I see. Ok I will try but some times it works and some times it doesn't so it is hard to know if that group of pics has a corrupt file, and there could be more then one, right? But i will try anyway.

Thank you everyone for all you help. I am going to spend the rest of the night to finish the project on my other computer, as it is due tomorrow, then I will work on isolating the problem pics and post back to let you know. Once again thank you all and have a good night! Talk to you tomorrow.

Wow, sounds like the render engine isn't closing after it finishes. I have no idea what I'm talking about when I say that.

Let's make sure it isn't some strange user prefs problem.

Open System Preferences from the Desktop and create a new user Account. Allow it to administer this computer. Log into the new account and see if the problem follows or not.

What file format are the pics ? All the same - like .psd or are they mixed formats ?

You 100% sure that none of them are in CMYK ?

All of them are jpegs. Yeah pretty sure, they are right from the scanner into the file which was imported into FCP. Thanks.
