Q: 2011 Macbook pro running slow and beach balling

My Early 2011 Macbook pro has been running extremely slow for a couple months.  It lags in startup and opening any applications.  It also happened to coincide with my Wifi refusing to recognize my Macbook, it kept saying that a device was already on the network with the same IP address. I tried reseting the IP address multiple times.  But since it never did this on any other networks I got a new router this week and haven't had the problem so far.

The bigger issue is the running slow, hot and lagging.  I have 8gb RAM and a 1TB HD. I am running OS X 10.11.5. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated!

This article is useful for "running hot" and slow-down issues:

Apps can affect Mac performance, battery runtime, temperature, and fan activity - Apple Support

If you do the steps as outlined (especially Item 1, setting to "All Processes," is critical) it can often pinpoint a software issue that is causing slowdowns.

Any form of anti-virus software is a performance killer. Do you have any installed? How about so-called "cleaning/optimizing/tune-up" apps? These are so unneeded on a modern Mac OS as to be very nearly outright fraud.

If you are not sure what has managed to creep into your computer, you can safely give us a snapshot of your config so we can look for known troublemakers. Please download this free utility:

It is secure and written by one of our most valued members to allow users to show details of their computer's configuration in Apple Support Communities without revealing any sensitive personal data. It does no repairs but rather reports potential issues for evaluation.

Run the program and click the "Share Report" button when it finishes. Choose "Copy to Clipboard" from the resulting menu. Then return here and paste the report into a response to your initial post. It can often show if any harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance or causing overheating.
