Q: How to unsupervise a device when restoring?

We are in the process of rolling out new iPhones in our next round of hardware refreshes. As part of that initiative, we will be supervising all devices using DEP. That's the easy part, we can get everybody enrolled and on MDM right out of the box. These devices will be company owned, personal enabled devices. So people are able to install their own apps and and such.

So the challenge lies when the user departs the organisation and we allow them to keep their phone. We can perform an enterprise wipe, which essentially removes all the work data on the device. However, now the user has a personal device that's supervised. The only way to unsupervise the device is to do a wipe. But if the user restores their backup, the device is supervised again.

So question is how do we backup a Supervised device, and restore it Unsupervised? Is this even possible?
