It sounds like after you updated iOS to 9.3.5, the display started to freeze up on you. Not to worry! Please try force restarting the device by using this link: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the device continues to freeze after the force restart, it maybe a good idea to back up the device using iCloud or iTunes. Click here for details: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Once you have your device's data backed up, try restoring it to place a fresh copy of iOS on it. Use this link: Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings
You can restore from your backup using this link: How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
