my yosemite mac pro cannot recognize my sata external drive

I am trying to use the SATA connection to a new external G-Technology drive and my yosemite mac pro will not recognize it. It will recognize it using Firewire 800. I would rather use the SATA connection because it is faster. Could it be that drivers were not included when the mac pro was upgraded to yosemite? Any advice would be appreciated.

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

direct connection to the logic board or a 3rd party bus card?

Most if not all modern macs came or still come with with SATA drives and it's a readable connection type in all versions of OS X. If the device works over FW but not SATA check your cables and power if you are connecting directly to the logic board and if you are using a 3rd party bus check to see the developer has drivers for 10.10

I have a 5,1 with all four bays using SATA drives and in 10.6, 10.9, 10.10 and 10.11 boots I can see them all.

G Drive has a faq for macs if you wish to try their suggestions
