AppleScript scripts won't open

I can make new scripts, and I can run them from the dropdown Script menu in the menubar, but my old ones will no longer open in Script Editor. I get the error "The document “asdf.scpt” could not be opened.”

Running 10.11.6. Not sure when this no-editing problem started.

Hello PlasmaticDragon,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I know having an issue with your AppleScripts is not what you expect. Based on what you stated, I would suggest these steps to narrow down if this is an issue with the files, your user account or something else:

1. First, use safe mode to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, delete system cache files, verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed. Then log in to your user account and test the issue again. Once you have tested the issue in safe mode, then restart your Mac normally and test the issue again.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up
Limited graphics performance in OS X recovery or safe mode

2. You can figure out if unexpected behavior is related to user file or setting by trying to reproduce the issue from another user account. This process includes creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Cheers!
