Q: Airport utility reports incorrect

Hi,

My Macbook Pro OS is El Capitain Ver 10.11.6

Airport Utility is Ver 6.3.6

2x latest Airport Extremes firmware ver 7.7.7, connected with ethernet, one in bridged mode, other is DHCP server.

When I awaken my macbook and logon then open Airport Utility, both extremes have an exclamation mark and amber led, the message that opens basically says along the lines of device not found or not connected and there is a Forget button. BUT the network is working fine. This doesn't happen on my iPad. It sounds like a bug to me, or is there a solution ?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

We have seen issues like this in the past few weeks, but I believe that it has been rectified by Apple. Regardless, per chance do you have either or both of your base stations configured to use your Apple ID for Back to My Mac? If so, disable it to see if this resolves the issue.

If not, we can try a few more things.

I've seen other threads mention this but I don't have a Back to My Mac entry in either of my base stations.

Ok, thanks for verifying that. I just wanted to rule it out.

Most likely then, it could be some network configuration settings on your MacBook Pro (MBP).

I would like for you to try the following, in order, stopping where the issue is, hopefully, resolved:

    1. Create a New User Account
      • System Preferences > Accounts
      • Click "+" to add a new account.
      • Log off, and then, log back on with the new user account.
      • Connect to your Wi-Fi network with your MBP.
      • Run the AirPort Utility.
      • If this resolves the problem, there may be something amiss with your current profile and will require further troubleshooting.
      • If this does not resolve the problem, go ahead and log back into your normal account and go on to the next step.
    2. Enable IPv6 "Link-local only" mode on the MBP.
      • System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > TCP/IP tab
      • Set the option "Configure IPv6" to Link-local only
      • Click on OK.
      • Click on Apply.
      • Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
      • Log off, then log back on your user account.
      • Try the AirPort Utility again.

Thank you for your help, much appreciated.

I should have mentioned it doesn't happen all the time and so far today on both occasions it didn't. :-(

In the last day or so, I had altered IPv6 as you have indicated and maybe this has resolved it, I'll give it some more time and will report back.
