iMac is booting painfully slowly

Hi,

This is has been an issue for a while, but seems to have gotten marginally worse with El Capitan. After turning on and/or a restart, it's a good 6 or 8 minutes - no exaggeration - until my computer can start opening programs without huge lag. About 10 minutes until it's at full speed.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Any ideas, or is this normal? I've repaired disc permissions, emptied trash, and generally keep the machine running as clean as I can without being an expert.

Thanks.

iMac, iOS 9.3.5

shut down

disconnect all external devices

boot into safe mode

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

then reboot normally without the devices

if the problem persists it could be 3rd party software such as a utility, a mac AV solution, or the hard drive needs to be replaced. For the first two it is recommend you uninstall these products using the method described by the developers on their websites as dragging to trash does not uninstall these types of programs.

[edit] in the event the drive is failing see the recommendations in the post above this and consider replacing the drive

Otherwise you may post an etrecheck report for further analysis

www.etrecheck.com

also you may wish to change your profile, the iMac nor any Mac computer runs iOS which is for smart devices, it helps if you have your current version of OS X when asking questions. This can be obtained from >About this Mac

You have several problems including some malware.

Start by ejecting and disconnecting your seagate external until your other issues are resolved.

Then, remove:

Adware: ⓘ

~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.spigot.ApplicationManager.plist

One adware file found. [Remove]

Then remove:

uTorrent

DirectorShockwave

Flip4Mac WMV Plugin

Silverlight

googletalkbrowserplugin

Perian

Lastly, watch the available disk space on your primary hard drive. It's getting a little tight.

Reboot, check performance, then repost another check.

Aug 27, 2016 10:42 AM in response to FishingAddict

Thanks very much FishingAddict - did what you suggested and the machine is definitely running faster now. Not sure what most of those files did, but I guess they weren't necessary. I'd say about 3-4 minutes to be up to full speed now. Here are the results:

Also - primary disk has 70GB free - that's getting a little tight?

Remove:

"com.Affinegy.InstaLANa.plist" from /Library/LaunchAgents

"com.bittorrent.uTorrent.plist" from ~/Library/LaunchAgents

Uninstall:

WiTopia (using their uninstaller or download their latest version and reinstall)

Java (if you don't absolutely need Java then by all means remove it completely from your Mac https://www.java.com/en/download/help/mac_uninstall_java.xml)

Remove:

Flip4Mac WMV Plugin (this is no longer supported and is a security threat)

All versions of Flash Player (yours is outdated and any version is a security threat)

Instal:

VLC Player (as a replacement for the former Flip4Mac and Perian)

Then reboot and see how it runs.

Ok, there are still a few things left and your Mac is clearly still not booting as it should.

1) Check your hosts file by executing the following in Terminal:

cat /etc/hosts

It should return the following. If there are any differences in yours let us know.

## # Host Database # # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry. ## 127.0.0.1 localhost 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost ::1 localhost

2) If you have not already, make sure you have a good backup before proceeding as we are going to remove the remnants of some old installations

3) Copy each of the following, paste into Terminal.app one at a time, hit enter between each. You will need to be prompted to enter your password after running the first command:

sudo rm /Library/LaunchAgents/com.Affinegy.InstaLANa.plist

sudo rm /Library/LaunchDaemons/net.witopia.WiTopiaHelper.plist

sudo rm ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.bittorrent.uTorrent.plist

4) Remove the Kies.app by downloading the latest installer (http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/), mounting the .dmg file, and then run the "Uninstall" app.

5) Then reboot and lets see if that clears it all up.

Okay, done and done. Still taking 4 minutes or so to get up and running.

This was what I got when executed cat /etc/hosts. It's the same as yours up to the part where it reveals the fact that I'm a dirty cheapskate and have an unregistered Adobe program on my computer. If that's the cause of all the delays, I think I'll have to live with it. Another pass by EntreCheck is pasted below that.

You may want to try disabling all of these user login items in "System Preferences" > "Users & Groups" > "Login Items":

HimmelBar Application Hidden (/Applications/HimmelBar.app)

Google Drive Application (/Applications/Google Drive.app)

Air Video Server HD Application Hidden (/Applications/Air Video Server HD.app)

Dropbox Application (/Applications/Dropbox.app)

StartAgent SMLoginItem (/Applications/CalendarFree.app/Contents/Library/LoginItems/StartAgent.app)

Disable them all, reboot, and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then only enable one at a time between reboots until you find the culprit.

I personally found that Google Drive is a major performance problem on my past Macs and no longer use it (just use the web interface instead). In the case of all of these startup items, either remove them if you don't absolutely need them, or download and install the latest version directly from the developer's website. I've never heard of HimmelBar, Air Video Server HD, or StartAgent so I would be cautious with those unless you know their trustworthiness.

Sep 3, 2016 8:39 AM in response to FishingAddict

Sorry, out of town for a bit. Thank you, sir, it's much improved now. Got rid of StartAgent, but HimmelBar (shortcut to applications in task bar) and Air Video Server (lets me send movies from my computer to my Apple TV) are both items I trust and use almost everyday, so I can't ditch those. Everything else, however, has resulted in a start up time of about 1:30 now, which might not be perfect, but is much much better. Thanks again.
