We need the model number of your AirPort Extreme to be to tell you whether it is single band or dual band. The model number is on the bottom of the AirPort......starts with an "A" followed by 4 numbers. An example would be A1143.
Next, it might help to understand that Apple uses proprietary technology to wirelessly "extend" a network, which is designed to only allow Apple routers to extend the signal from another Apple router.
When routers wirelessly extend a network, there will always be a loss of about half of the potential speed on the network. Nature of beast with wireless extension. This loss can be avoided if the routers connect using a wired Ethernet connection.
You don't indicate how the AirPort will connect to the Netgear network, so it would help if you could clarify on that.
It is extremely unlikely that an AirPort could wirelessly extend the signal from a third party router. If your AirPort is an AirPort Express, it can probably "join" the Netgear network so that it will work for AirPlay or allow a remote USB printer to be connected.
But, the Express (or Extreme, if that is what you have) does not "extend" the network when it "joins", so wireless devices near the AirPort device will still connect all the way back to your main router.
So, it might be a good idea to check the settings on the Express using AirPort Utility to find out exactly what it is and is not doing on your network.
