Q: 2009 Macbook stuck on white screen

My friend's family has an old macbook, I am guessing from either early or late 2009 by the fact that "2009" is printed on the hard drive. We tried to boot it up one day and nothing, the screen was just white. So we decided to take the hard drive out as I could hear something clicking and I later found out that it was indeed the hard drive. So I went ahead and used my friends MBP to create a OS X El capitan installation usb. I was able to hold option and select the USB flash drive as the boot disk (and it is the only boot disk in the computer) however after selecting it the light on my flash drive that indicates it is being read/ written to continues flashing. However for a minute or two nothing happens on the macbook, after a couple minutes the fan turns on so it is audible, the light on my USB stick keeps flashing but nothing seems to happen, just a white screen, no loading or anything, I have been letting it run for about 5 or 6 minutes now but like i said, nothing seems to happen. Any one have any ideas? Oh and I have reset the NVRAM/PRAM and the SMC a couple times. Thanks for any help.
