If this does not help try updating through iTunes on your computer.

Aug 26, 2016 8:20 AM in response to tiggerlilby elcpu,★HelpfulRemarkably there is no Error 54 listed by Apple but for the closest ones (53 and 56) the recommended steps are this:
Check for hardware issues
If you see error 53, learn what to do.
Here's what to check:
Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes.
Check for issues with third-party security software.
Make sure that your USB cable, computer, and network are reliable. Then try twice more to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod.
If you still see the error message, you can check for outdated or modified software or contact Apple Support.

Aug 26, 2016 8:24 AM in response to elcpuby tiggerlil,Remarkably, on its own, iTunes retried update to iPad and succeeded. I did nothing and just left the ipad connected to iTunes on my laptop. On its own, it started a backup and installed the iOS update on the iPad. ??? "It's a mystery" - Shakespeare in Love
