repair permissions on a NAS

I have uploaded an iPhoto library on a NAS drive located in my home network so that all macs and iPads can access the same iPhoto library. When I try to access the remote iPhoto library by pressing the option button and launching iPhoto it takes about 20min and then reports that permissions must be repaired. I tried to use the disk utility but the NAS drive is not available to be scanned. Anyone has an idea? How can I repair permissions on a remotely located drive?

It is not possible to have your iPhoto library on a NAS - it must be on a local drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled), connected with a fast wired connection like FireWire, USB or ThunderBolt that is n ot used as your TimeMachine backup volume and is always available prior to launching iPhoto

And of course iPhoto is not a multi user program so even without the format issues this would not work

and I will request that your thread be moved to the correct iPhoto forum (you posted in the newer Photos for Mac forum - Photos for Mac has the same storage requirements

As Larry says, a NAS is not a suitable location for an iPhoto Library and that accounts for the permissions problem. It will also over time risk seriously corrupting the Library. The performance issue is due to the Networked location. Again, iPhoto was not designed for network access. In a nutshell, what you want to do will require some other application.

Any DAM (Digital Asset Manager) that is designed for a multiuser environment and a NAS environment - the exact one would be totally a personal decision requiring you to research and make the decision - that is not a question that can be answered by anyone but yoh

None are free like Photos and iPhoto and none include mac OS integration like Photos and iPhoto

Take a look at Media Pro SE. It will do exactly what you want. There's a demo version that you can try. If you still have your iPhoto library you can follow this tutorial to get a start on converting your photos over to a Media Pro SE system: iP03 - Converting an iPhoto Library to a Media Pro Catalog System.

You can use any image editor of your choice from within MP SE or several as the case may be.

I use MP SE for my primary DAM and Photos for special projects like book, calendars, etc.
