Display won't come on after restart

Hi, after I restart my MacBook Pro (w retina) the display won't come on. I have to close the Macbook, wait several minutes, then open it back up. Only then does the display come on. I want to reinstall OS X to see if it will fix the problem, but I can't get to the disk utility on boot due to the display not coming on. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?
