Q: Lost local disk space when uploading to iCloud from iPhoto.

Need some clarification.  Using iPhoto (v.9.6.1).

Have photos already in iPhoto, but when I create albums and upload to iCloud, my local disk space disappears.  I don't understand why I would be loosing local disk space by UPLOADING pictures that are already on my local drive?!?

Any clarity would be helpful, thanks!

When you create a shared album that's online copies of the photos in that are in that album are stored on the hard drive in the HD/Users/Home/Library/Application Support/Assets/sub-shared folder.

So to be clear, iPhoto will duplicate photos already in my local library just because Im sharing them online?  Seems like it should be smarter than that.  Is there a way to prevent the duplication?

Selecting photos in local iPhoto>Share>iCloud>New Photostream

Not that I know of.  It's possible that the reason for this is so you can have an album online with photos that you've deleted from the library after uploading to the shared album.

What type of Mac do you have and how big is your boot drive?

500 gb SSD boot drive + 3 additional internal drives.  Disk space isn't a huge issue, but unfortunately the iPhoto library is on the startup drive, so it ate up a ton of space i wasn't expecting to loose.  Actually dropped to 2 gb free before deleting some old photo streams.  Will look at relocating the iPhoto library to one of the other drives, but not sure all the assets will go with it.  Seems like those stay in HD/Users/Home/Library/Application Support/Assets/sub-shared.

Yes.  Those assets will remain on the boot drive.  But if you move your library to another volume that will free up a lot of space so what's in the sub-shared folder will not be a drain on the free space.
