Yes. A better upgrade is a newer computer that can handle at least 8 GBs of RAM.
Upgrade RAM on a 8 year old Mac? It's not worth the expense.
There are other ways to troubleshoot the spinning beach ball.
Check the startup disk.
Open Disk Utility located in /Applications/Utilities
The select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab then click Run.
Before you go out and purchase additional memory download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here (and recommended by Apple Support personnel) in the ASC to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.
A year ago I would have said yes. My 2011 iMac hit a ram bottleneck with 4GB under Yosemite and now uses ~5.5GB on an average day under El Capitan.
But today? No. Your iMac's days are limited anyway since the upcoming macOS Sierra doesn't support it; thus money spent upgrading could probably be better used saving for a new/newer machine.
Thank you very much
well new iMac and OS is due in 30 days, which may not work on this old computer. Thanks
