Q: can't load Photos Library from old iPhotos

I have a 2009 iMac running Yosemite OS 10.10.5. 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 GB memory (maxed out). I have 159.02 GB free of 639.28 GB and I have a 3 TB Seagate external, 2.55 TB free of 3.

I have had this problem a long time. It cropped up, I couldn't figure it out and I left it.

Now my husband is after me to fix it (he thinks I'm the tech guru here - ha!)

When I updated to Yosemite, my iPhotos program no longer was there, and I had to load the new Photos. It tried to load but keeps getting stuck at either 11 percent or 24 percent. I left it overnight once and it still did not load any further.

I am wondering if I do not have enough memory for it on the internal drive. Thoughts?

There are two libraries: iPhoto library (which asks for the updater) and iPhoto library 1, which is the one I am currently trying to load. I hope this iPhoto library 1 has all my photos. Crossing fingers.

I saw something in the forum that said you need to run ANDRUN or something like that and then do something with iPhoto. 1) I don't know where to get this program and 2) I don't have access to iPhoto any more.

I am worried about all my many pictures I had in iPhoto. Now I have more photos in my phone and iPad that I can't load.

Help!

iMac, null

Should more than adequate free space - what is the size of your iPhoto and your Photos libraries?

iPhoto library (which asks for the updater)

OK - have you downloaded and run the iPhoto upgrader as requested?  Using the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool - Apple Support

If you ae being told to then you can not complete until you do

Thanks. Yes, I had already downloaded the updater.

This time, it worked for some reason. I cleared everything off my desktop (I am in the habit of putting things there) and I also ran a cleaning tool. I don't know if those helped or not, but those are some housekeeping things I needed to do.

Thanks for looking out for me. So far, so good. It's definitely slower than iPhoto was, and we kind of miss Faces, but we will do the tour and see what's what.

Downloading is not enough - you have to Download and RUN the library upgrader as stated and explains din the instructions I posted

And I Strongly recommend you get rid of all "cleaning tools" - they are not needed and often cause great damage - Do NOT use cleaning tools - especially Malwear like CleanMyMac or MacKeeper

And once Photos completes its background set up it will be faster that iPhoto - and I'm not clear why you miss faces - they are carried over from iPhoto and Photos supports it totally

Thanks. I found Faces. Not as user-friendly as iPhoto, but I guess I will adjust. It will be faster if I am able to get a newer computer. This one slows everything down. Appreciate the help.

Actauly mostly more user friendly as iPhoto - but not the same - there is a learning curve and it is well worth reading the full help file including the overview to get started - Photos is a totally new program not an upgrade to iPhoto
