Q: Exiting iTunes, "iTunes has stopped working".

iTunes starts "saving the library" but then alerts that "iTunes has stopped working". I select the option "Close the program" and the "saving" finishes.

Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: C:\Users\username\App Data\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins\
There are no plug-ins shown, the folder is empty.

QuickTime updated to version 7.7.9

iTunes updated to version 12.4.3

Apple Software Update to version 2.2

Error does not happen when loading iTunes in safe-mode. The program ends by saving the library correctly. iTunes Library.itl is not updated. Here's what the error produced by way of a report: "Appcrash".

C:\Windows\system32\en-US\erofflps.txt

C:\Windows\system32\en-US\erofflps.txt

When iTunes is reopened it reports that the Library.itl file is damaged and builds a new, empty library.

null, iOS 8.4, iTunes

OK, used iTunes library file from 22 Aug in iTunes safe mode and it opened. Share XML turned off. I've been here before so I haven't closed iTunes. Before on closing it produces the "iTunes and stopped working" message and doesn't write to the library file. Before I do this, is there anything I might do with the library open?

Play a song, rate an album, edit some meta data, anything that actually updates the database. You should be able to see that it gets updated if you watch the folder where the .itl lives. You may also see the .tmp file flick into and out of existence. Given the size of the library it ought to be evident.

Played a song, edited an album and imported a new album before closing. Did not produce the "not working" error but it DID NOT write to the library file.

Repeat the experiment, but this time delete the other three files shown in your image. With the sentinel file missing iTunes should run an integrity check on the database. With luck it will fix things rather than breaking them.

The .itl seems a little small. Mine is bigger and I only have around 65k tracks, although I suppose I do have many more playlists than I really need.

OK, will delete and repeat the experiment and get back to you.

BTW, your comment about the .itl looking small. Is the size a function of the number of playlists, or the number of tracks. Considering the former, I have only 5 playlists.

Back to where we started with an appcrash identifying ntdll.dll as the cause.

    And here's the file list:

    Capture7.JPG

Nothing written to the library file, and no other files present. So much for the sentinel!

Both. All data about the library is stored in the .itl. There is a record for each track with all of its metadata. Playlists are ordered lists of 128-bit library persistent track IDs. I've got quite a lot of large smart playlists so I guess that explains why you might have almost four times as many tracks but a similar sized library file.

    Grrr.

How is the health of the hard drive and/or the RAM?

I ran diagnostics earlier to check on hard drive and ram. Nothing identified.

As to why and under what circumstances it writes to the library file, there's still a mystery.

And why are the other three files still missing?

When those three are there and the date for the library file is different, is that what causes the launch error?

    Still so many questions.

Test behaviour in a new profile?

Test behaviour with an empty library into which you import say a single album?

OK. But can you guide me through the creation of new profile?

For some reason, the setup new accounts screen is blank and will not respond. I've checked out solutions but don't have time right now. Might explain what's happening but doubtful.

I set up a new account under administrator at windows login and downloaded (repaired) iTunes. It loads content and writes to the iTunes library file. Behaviour is ok both on empty data and after addition of a single album.

    Now what?

Back in the main profile go into C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes. Rename the file iTunesPrefs.xml as something like iTunesPrefs (Old).xml and launch iTunes. This should reset all settings that are not stored as part of the library database, but including the path to the active library so you may need to shift-start-iTunes to select your desired .itl file.
