External hard drive that's compatible with 10.5.8 os

Hi , I have an old 2009 iMac 2.4 ghz intel core 2 dual running 10.5.8. I want to update the os to snow leopard.

Ive been told I should back up my system before installing the update.....but I cant find a external hard drive that compatible with 10.5.8...any suggestions??? (seagate / WD?)

Any USB 2.0 drive will work.

Just reformat if necessary...

I saw a 1 terabyte Western Digital My Passport at Staples / Office Max for around $60,

but another post said they were having problems with the USB 3.0 interface...

I use FireWire 800 drives on mine, faster.

You can then put in a drive of your choice, I would stay away from Western Digital Reds or Greens until the idle time error is fixed...

I would avoid WD Passports entirely I've been here a looong time and have seen too many problem reports involving WD Passports. In addiiton to coming formatted for Windows, their USB-only interface will, after time, demand more power than a single USB port can provide and you will start to hate it.

I also now buy only OWC enclosures that come with an independent power supply and install the higher-grade WD bare drives in them. As all our Mac have FireWire ports, I go for drives with that interface. Zero issues.

I use this enclosure on our desktop Macs: OWC Mercury Elite Pro eSATA, FireWire 400/800 & USB 3.0/2.0/1.1 Enclosure Kit and this one for traveling with our MacBook Pros (I ge tteh optional AC adaptor): OWC Mercury Elite Pro eSATA, FireWire 400/800 & USB 3.0/2.0/1.1 Enclosure Kit

Don't cheap out on a backup drive. After all what is your data worth?

Sorry, many deives come Formatted for Qindows computers...

NTFS (New Technology File System) is a proprietary file system developed by Microsoft. Starting with Windows NT 3.1, it is the default file system of Windows NT family.

Yes, the Drive should work if it has USB or FW 800 interface.
