How old is the iMac. If after 2010, it should be able to boot into Internet Recovery. From there you can format the drive and install OS X. About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
If older than that, you must start with he Install DVD that came with the iMac, or a retail Snow Leopard disk, whichever is newer.

holding down Option-Command-R to start up from OS X Internet Recovery*.
You may have to use a wired keyboard.
For PC keyboard :
Control=Mac Command
Alt= Mac Option
Windows/Start= Mac Command/Apple key

Aug 27, 2016 7:11 AM in response to evenftby dialabrain,FWIW, if none of that works and you know someone else with a Mac you could create a bootable installer on a USB flash drive and boot from that. Otherwise, you will probably need to make an appointment at an Apple store or an AASP.

You can't make a bootable installer on a Windows machine. Transmac just allows Windows to access Mac drives.
