Q: Airport Express disappeared from Airplay

I have a 2nd generation Airport Express running version 7.6.7.

I am using it in order to play music from my ipad/iphone/macbook to my stereo (connection through the airport's jack port).

Airport Express is connected to my router through ethernet. Therefor its setup is the following:

  • Internet connection with Static ip.
  • Wireless OFF
  • Network in Bridge Mode
  • Airplay enabled

Normally in the past since it was in the same network as my ipad I could directly hear my music playing from my iPad through my stereo by selecting Airport Express from iPad Airplay. Now I may no longer do that. Airport Utility shows Airport Express only when I am directly connected on it through the second port.

(The strange thing is that I also have an Apple TV with similar settings installed and I may see it normally from any device...)

Any suggestions please?

Thank you in advance for your time.

What exact model is your iPad? Did you happen to update it to iOS 9.3.5 recently?

So both the Apple TV and AirPort Express are connected to your "main" router by Ethernet, but only the Apple TV shows up as a AirPlay device on your iPad ... correct?

Were you able to use the Express for AirPlay prior to upgrading its firmware to 7.6.7? Have you tried downgrading the firmware yet?

Yes, I was able to use Airport Express for Airplay prior to upgrading the firmware to 7.6.7.

I followed your suggestion and downgraded back to 7.6.4, however the result was exactly the same so I reinstalled 7.6.7 and kept trying too figure out what causes the problem.

    • One thing that I noticed was that while I was connected to my wifi network, I was able to ping the address of Airport Express which is strange considering the fact that Airport Utility may not see it through wifi only through ethernet cable.

The AirPort Utility uses IPv6 & Bonjour to "see" the AirPort base stations. It may be possible that your Express is not configured properly. Specifically, we want to enable IPv6 Link-local only mode on the Express.

    Here's how:

    From the iPad:

    • Tap on the AirPort Utility.
    • Tap on the Express, and then, select tap Edit
    • Tap Advanced > IPv6
    • Configure IPv6: Link-local only
    • Tap Done.

I couldn't connect through my iPad as iPad's Airport Utility may not see Airport Express.

So I connected from a mac with ethernet instead.

IPv6 menu was located under the Internet tab-->Internet Options. I configured IPv6 to Link-Local only but the result was the same as before. I am attaching a picture from the Airport settings:

Sorry, but at this point, I am not sure what the issue may be. The only thing I can still suggest is to perform a "factory default" reset on the Express to see if that helps.
