Delete multiple photos from iCloud

I use icloud photos with multiple devices, including an iPhone 4, an iPad, a Macbook pro and two PCs.

My icloud library is too large, containing many duplicates (same photo taken several times) and many photos I don't want to keep.

Deleting photos from the library using the icloud library is a slow, cumbersome process. I can only delete one at a time, each time taking 20 seconds or more, even with a high speed internet connection.

How can I select & delete several photos at once?

Hello rhwolfson,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like you want to be able to remove multiple pictures from iCloud Photo Library at the same time. I will do my best to help find a solution for you.

The easiest way to remove multiple photos is to sign into iCloud.com on one of the computers you listed. Once signed in, click on the photos icon. When you are in the "Moments" view, you should see "Select Photos" in the upper right of the browser window. Click "Select Photos". You should now be able to select multiple photos, and then click the "Delete" button that appears. This should allow you to remove multiple photos at one time.

Have a great day!

Hi msmsys,

My iCloud looks slightly different than yours, and at first I thought your solution didn't work on mine. Then I realized you're talking about a smaller "share" button that sometimes appears in a row underneath the larger "share" button! I had to scroll just right to get it to appear. It worked! Thank you for your solution.

I'll note that this works day-by-day, not with all the photos I've ever taken, but it still solved my problem!

This is only working for you because you have a few pics taken on the same date. For the rest of us having a full gallery, one would have to keep clicking on the small + for each date / group of pics.

I disabled my iCloud for photos and now want to delete them from iCloud but I am unable to do so. So smart, Apple.

As many already asserted here, "The only obvious reason could be pushing adoption of iCloud storage" (i.e. end up paying).

Why would apple take away the ability to delete multiple photos from the cloud? It seems each "upgrade" that I'm eventually required to get results in poorer functioning of all my apple devices. I can't even imagine why a company would strive to make their products perform worse year after year, and we have to pay for service to fix their self-induced problems. Also, iTunes was great 10 years ago, now it *****. I'm ready to go back to PCs: better, cheaper, more accessible to fix yourself. Apple designs things to fail. I'm done with Apple. No longer a good company.

I agree, this does feel like a ploy to have people spend more money on storage.

I have an external hard drive I use to store my photos from my phone periodically and backup my computer. I ended up deleting my entire photo library on ICloud using the link below. I plan on turning backup on again after the 30 days:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204247

Summary:

Delete backups and turn off iCloud Backup for your device

Use these steps for your device.

iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

iOS 10.3 or later:

  1. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
  2. If you use iOS 11, tap Manage Storage > Backup. If you use iOS 10.3, tap iCloud Storage > Manage Storage.
  3. Tap the name of the device you are using [i.e. (Device-name) This (device type)].
  4. Tap Delete Backup > Turn Off & Delete.

iOS 10.2 or earlier:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage.
  2. Under iCloud, tap Manage Storage.
  3. Tap the name of the device you are using [i.e. (Device-name) This (device type)].
  4. Tap Delete Backup > Turn Off & Delete.

When you delete a backup, it also turns off iCloud Backup of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

frustrating and quite likely -

i don't want to store in the iCloud and never did - yet in the course of moving libraries with apple representatives i accidentally had photos put into iCloud. Never wanted and yet i have a major task to delete them ... and why can't this be done in one move. i spoke with an agent about cleaning my library back in 2016 and 2017 - - i'm finally dealing with in 2018. Wish it would be easier.

A friend of mine works at Apple. She says they removed the option to select multiple photos in bulk (using SHIFT) so that deleting files would be too cumbersome and people would be forced to buy more iCloud storage.

It's sickening manipulation.

No wonder Apple is the wealthiest company in the world.

I can't wait to offload all of my Apple gear and switch to Android.

They think we must be helpless, weak minded weasels ripe for manipulation or something.

Yes Apple does indeed have nasty surprises in i0S which people are complaining about bitterly. However it’s nothing compared to Android/Google which is actively in business selling any user data to those it can. Google is in trouble with the E.U over this ,especially the new G.D.R.P privacy laws which Google‘s practices are in direct violation of.
