Q: I have an early 2008 macpro which is having a booting problem.

My early 2008 Macpro can not get past the initial startup. I have tried booting from the DVD and different HD's with OS 10.6 - 10.10 with the same results. I get the startup chime and the OS starts to load after a few seconds a message appears that my mac mas experienced a problem and will restart. This goes on and on no matter what I try! I reset the NVRAM and nothing has changed. What else should I try?

You could certainly try the baking trick, I was thinking of that but needed to get a more certain solution quickly as I use my MacPro for work. There are many videos on YouTube showing what to do, particularly with the GeForce 8800, but some disagreement on the exact temperature you need and which way up the card should be, so might be best to check out a few and try and reach a view on who's right.

Good luck, let us know if it works...

    Update to my ongoing dilemma...

Apple re-seller replaced the video card with same (I think they went thru their junk box to find it) . Total cost so far $380. Brought it home and it still does not work... big sigh... Back to the Apple authorized store for who know what...

I think replacing it with the same was a mistake, it seems these cards are particularly unreliable. See if they can put something else in it instead, and test it at the store. They also ought to refund you for the last visit as they didn't fix your problem.

This site lists both the standard video cards offered with the MacPro and upgrade cards that are compatible:

You should be able to pick one up on eBay for less than the $130 you mentioned for a GeForce 8800GT.
