Q: Google Drive sometimes starts on boot

Sometimes Google Drive starts when I boot up my Mac. I cannot figure out any reason why it does not does not do so. The option to start on book in the Google Drive preferences is unchecked.

When I look at my login start-up items, it is not there.

Regardless of whether this is a Google Drive issue, I'm concerned about the Mac OS allowing software to start up when it doesn't show in the login items.

I contacted Apple Support and after they told me to hold down shift when logging into my system (it doesn't help), they refused to help me any further.

Is there a way to figure this out and prevent it?

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

    Wow, thank you so much.

Starting in safe mode not only solved that problem, but Safari is no longer re-opening closed tabs (that option is unchecked), my Wi-Fi doesn't toggle on and off on restart and other issues are solved.

I hope Apple will tell their representatives about this solution instead of blocking customers.

FWIW, it appears there was a lack of communication somewhere. According to your first post…

I contacted Apple Support and after they told me to hold down shift when logging into my system (it doesn't help), they refused to help me any further.

it seems logging in vs restarting was the issue. After all, starting in safe mode is holding the shift key while restarting.

Their advice was to enter the password and hold down the shift key while pressing return.

Okay, it turned out this didn't solve it (even though it solved a lot of other issues).

So I ran EtreCheck and found that Google Drive had a launch agent. Using Spotlight did not work, so I went to Library > LaunchAgents and deleted the Google Drive agent. I deleted Google Drive from Applications and emptied the trash. Then I rebooted, and downloaded and reinstalled Google Drive.

The LaunchAgent has not reappeared and the problem appears to be solved.
