I have an iMac 21.5 inch Mid 2010 OSX EL Capitan Version 10.11.6 and I am getting occasional yellow notes that appear on the desktop display which say my iMac 4 local name changed to imac5 local what does this mean?

it means some service tried opening a connection & couldn't, possibly IPv4 vs. IPv6 or iCloud/Back to my Mac.

I thought Apple fixed that annoying problem a long time ago. At the time, they advised cycling the power on your AirPort Base Stations as well as all other Internet-connected devices including AppleTV.
After that, it shouldn't come back.
