upgraded to OS X El Capitan and can't locate my photos. It opens as a new set up with no history of my photos. How do i access all my photos or recover them?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Do you have any other Macs? Or iOS devices? If so, you can backup all your photos to an iCloud backup and then you can restore them on your Mac.

Try starting Photos with the Option key held down. It will ask to find a library or start a new one. Navigate to your Pictures folder and select the iPhoto Library.
