i'm trying to set or lock my volume and being asked to enter a combination but i've never created a combination

I have the ipod classic. I bought a portable speaker xboom so I could listen without my headphones. But the volume has to be turned up and when I got to set volume limit it's asking me for a combination! I've never created a combination for this device! I've been thru the manual and have done what it says but nothings working. I didn't know if "resetting" the ipod would take care of that or not so I'm trying to find an answer first before I try anything else. Thanks
